TIG Welding Cart
(Scroll Down for Images)

I was lucky enough to receive a new TIG welder for Christmas. Another tool I had been wanting for a life time and I'm very happy to have it. It's a Cigweld WeldSkill 205.

I needed a cart for it, so I did the usual and had a look around for a commercial offering. What I could buy in Australia was cheap junk. Terrible stuff, flat packed, light gauge steel, crappy castors/wheels, poor design and manufacturing. None of which would hold a "G" size cylinder.
My design criteria:
  • A drawer for TIG consumables.
  • Unobtrusive, robust and easy to use lead storage. My TIG lead is 8 meters long.
  • Be able to hold G, E and D sized Argon cylinders.
After a lot of thought, dimensioning, and a lot more thought I came up with a design and got to work. The cart took me almost two months to build, and I put in every spare hour I could find. Some parts of the build I found very challenging, especially the draw. I cut the 2mm cold rolled plate with my circular saw. Not a pleasant process but the result was good. I used ball bearing drawer slides, meaning the drawer had to be very accurate. I added some adjustable magnet stops for the draw and a few other nice features such as inlaying the top shelf by 4mm to hold a rubber mat without having to glue it on, and adjustable brackets to cater for different sized gas bottles.

I'm pleased with the result, but was pleased when it was finished as It was a huge amount of work.
